SUMMARY

The Packaging Process Development Manager leads the technical development of packaging solutions for new and existing products.  They will drive the packaging process development from product concept through commercialization of primary packaging, and drive continuous improvement to resolve packaging related issues in operations, improve packaging performance, cost etc. This role requires a detail-orientated person who will be responsible for leading projects within the new product introduction & packaging development portfolio.  In addition, the Packaging Process Development Manager will work closely with Supply Chain to leverage existing relationships with technical packaging vendors and to understand packaging process constrains with a focus on packaging components, packaging testing and packaging operations line.  This role will also work closely with packaging suppliers and contract manufacturers to recommend, review, test and identify costs for various packaging process proposals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Serves as the packaging technical lead in establishment of new/revision of existing packaging specifications across all phases of development. Responsible for the creation and maintenance of packaging specifications within SAP.
  • Leads line trials for packaging materials, works with cross-functional teams (Marketing, Strategic Sourcing, R&D, Production, Supply Chain and Quality). Properly plan, coordinate and report each trial, provide appropriate level of technical support and troubleshooting to execute trial objectives and ensure proper documentation of each activity.
  • Design, plan and conduct analytical testing, line trials and package performance testing; evaluate and interpret technical data findings and clearly communicate results to stakeholders.
  • Support and maintain relationships and constant communication with key pack material vendors on the development of new concepts, materials, and quality improvements.
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise from package development, line trials and commercialization with limited supervision. Perform root-cause analysis and technical problem solving to packaging quality issues.
  • Identifies and implements packaging material/component standardization opportunities associated to manufacturing, materials, and overall package quality.
  • Drives technical matters with packaging suppliers, with a focus on product sensory, product-packaging interactions and packaging shelf-life expectations.
  • Challenges conventional thinking on packaging related subjects by implementing creative solutions to continuous improvement activities and revenue driving initiatives.
  • Manages multiple projects of either a continuous improvement nature (cost savings, productivity gains, and process improvements) sustainability, or to fulfill a specific business need – with a primary focus on consumer led innovations to drive revenue.
  • Works closely with R&D, Operations, Finance, Quality Assurance, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Maintenance and Engineering to adequately understand and meet business needs and requirements related packaging process development, while overcoming business challenges.
  • Developer and guardian of system standards, ensure compliance to specified requirements for packaging materials/specifications and finished pack quality, and standard packaging line parameters.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
BS in Packaging Science or Packaging Engineering or BS in mechanical engineering with at least 5 years relevant Packaging R&D experience.  Master’s a plus.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • 5+ years’ experience preferred in packaging or related field of work.
  • Knowledge of dietary supplement and/or consumer packaged goods, packaging fundamentals and application to the product development process are required.
  • Robust experience in utilizing scientific principles to solve technical problems.  Technical leadership and strong project management, proven for complex initiatives and programs.
  • Knowledge of packaging sustainability, and market trends within the industry is a plus.
  • Knowledge of CAD programs and/or Adobe illustrator is a plus.
  • Ideal candidate must be capable of working in a fast-paced, team environment with minimal direct supervision and the ability to adhere to aggressive deadlines.
  • Ideal candidate is expected to provide overall leadership for the packaging function including the development, testing, and validation of packaging systems, packaging equipment, and manufacturing processes to support market releases and commercial product launches.
